 This
fictional novel, set in China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries, tells the story of the peasants' uprising against their tyrannical
imperial rulers and the rich landowners who make their lives so intolerable.
Sun-sei, the fourth child of poor farmers in Shaoshan Chung, befriends another
boy in his village whose parents are much richer than his own. But there is another
major difference: while Sun-sei accepts his lot, Mao Tse-tung nurtures a dream
that China will one day belong to the people.
The friends drift apart as Mao
takes advantage of educational opportunities that are denied to Sun-sei but they
meet again years later when Sun-sei finally forsakes his unhappy life to join
the Long March - the march that will ultimately determine China's destiny.

A
family are totally devastated when their pretty teenage daughter, Rebecca, is murdered on her way home from school. Her killer is quickly apprehended but
the police have a weak case as they cannot find the murder weapon or the killer’s accomplices. And then things get worse. The trial is hampered by the
unexpected death of the only witness, the jury is nobbled, and there is interference from corrupt freemasons who are members of the same lodge as the
killer’s father. As a result, the accused youth walks free, even though his guilt was never in doubt.
The murdered girl’s father, Tony Stewart, cannot come to terms with the fact that the British legal system has failed him so badly and he
has only one thought on his mind - retribution! He knows the murderer cannot be tried again for the same crime so there is only one possible solution. He
must wait for the perfect opportunity and then take his revenge. He is determined that Terry Bodycombe must pay the full penalty for his crime and yet he
knows that, if he is caught, the same legal system that denied justice for his daughter may not look favourably upon his own actions. But there are others
who also aim to rectifying deficiencies in the legal system and Tony is caught up in their conspiracy. Vengeance can be his after all ... but the cost may
be greater than he imagined.
* * *
The far-reaching consequences of this tragedy also have long-term effects on the lives and relationships of many of the main characters.
They are all involved by circumstances surrounding the murder and they react in different ways. Some are forced apart as passions subside; others are
drawn together as torrid desires take over their minds and bodies. In a way, they are all indirect victims of the killer. |

Adult Fiction |
Content: Adults only |
James Hastings was just like any other young man starting his adult
life; decent job, fanatical interest in rugby, plenty of good pals, lots
of booze and a keen eye for the girls - many and often. Then he met Anne
and his life started changing. A strong relationship developed. It could
even have been a lasting relationship but for the other players who came
as part of the deal - Anne's parents, Dora and Bert.
Their influence on Anne never diminished. They ran her life as though
she was still living at home and they continually interfered; an act that
eventually broke up the relationship because neither James nor Anne were
the free agents they wanted to be. When the end came, they each went their
separate ways with a newly-developed black side that would obviously have
a detrimental effect on later relationships.
And it did. |

Adults and mature students |
Have you ever wondered why Nike and Sony rule the world? Do you
actually know why you don't want to sit on the pavement with the people
who sell the Big Issue? Did you ever consider that poetry might save your
life or wonder what happened to the Kibbo Kift Kindred? Were you ever
tempted to think there might indeed be hobgoblins in the woods? Did you
think you could admire William Morris wallpaper without being a socialist?
Probably not, but such questions have a bearing on all our lives and
this book provides the answers.
"Searching for the Promised Land" is not just a story about a town in
South Essex, it is also a state of mind; a sense of knowing where we have
come from, where we are going to, and the journey we have undertaken.
The story analyses London's working class diaspora and the death of the
autodidactic tradition. It exposes the secret admirers of Enoch Powell and
offers cycling as an anarchist statement compared to boxing as a morally
improving activity.
The whole book is interlaced with a whimsical regard for poetry and a
wealth of good stories told in the author's quirky manner. Above all, it
shows a reckless disregard for both propriety and good sense.

Halo and Goodbye by Simon Cooke (NZ) |
|
Publisher: |
GoldStar |
ISBN: N/A |
|
Category: |
Humorous Fantasy |
Content: Adults only |
Darkness, an ancient evil, and Bezhaht, an ambitious angel, both seek
to bring about the downfall of Heaven. The former, ever modest in its
ambitions, hopes to destroy all Creation, including lamb vindaloo and
public holidays. The latter, a fully paid-up member of the Megalomaniac
Appreciation Society, seeks to become Emperor of All Things. Both believe
the following prophecy: “A man taken before his time on Earth is up, will
step through the Pearly Gates and this step shall herald the End. Heaven
shall fall and its battlements will crumble to the ground.”
All the two dastardly fiends need is a candidate to get them the
Heavenly access they require. Colin Bricksford, a well-meaning but
clueless idiot, is selected as the Chosen One and is killed in a contrived
accident. Can it be that the prophecy will be fulfilled and all human kind
will be doomed?
Cess, a demon and servant of Bezhaht, disguised as an angel, convinces
Colin’s ghost that he must journey to Heaven in the hopes of convincing
the Powers-That-Be to sort out his untimely death. While Colin's only
ambition is to get his life back, Cess finds himself getting to like the
lad and he begins to question not only his mission but his existence as
doer of evil deeds and spreader of discontent.
This is a story that will involve all readers from the first page to
the last, no matter what their religious convictions, or even lack of
convictions. Written with great style, it has the page turning qualities
of all good books and the author has introduced his own blend of subtle
humour.
THIS IS A MUST-READ BOOK THAT WILL GRIP YOU FROM THE BEGINNING.

ISBN: 1-904166-08-3 |
| Category: |
Crime Thriller |
Content: Adults only |
Set in London, “Anywhere But Here” tells the hilarious and moving story of reluctant mini-cab driver Ese Urhobo.
Having just left university with a degree in law, Ese takes up mini-cabbing to clear his debts. Unamused, his long-time girlfriend decides to dump him
so he takes up with the stunning Mary but it all goes wrong when Mary’s sexuality threatens their seemingly perfect relationship.
But Ese’s problems increase when a passenger dies in his cab and he is charged with murder. The circumstantial evidence is overwhelming and he tries
coming to terms with the chilling possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars for a crime he did not commit. But all is not lost. His mentor
and old lecturer, the distinguished Professor Hopkins, agrees to take the case after a long absence from the law courts.
The story develops through to the emotionally charged courtroom drama that captures the imagination of the country’s media. Through all of this, Ese's
dream is to return to his native Nigeria and practise law - a dream that can only come true if he is found innocent.
